Breaking Bad Season Finale

The Breaking Bad season finale was on last night, and it was mind-blowing (in more ways than one!)

Some critics have thought that Gus' death scene was over-the-top, walking out of the room with half of his face blown off, straightening his tie, then collapsing, but I thought it was great!

I also liked the way the reveal that Walter had poisoned a child (truly falling to the depths of evil) with the slow pull-in of the camera on the Lily of the Valley plant, was brilliant. Many have also complained about this, that we should have seen how Walter was able to get the poison to the child, but I think most of those issues will be visited in the upcoming (and many say final) season, and I liked it as the cliff-hanger.

Sons of Anarchy

On Twitter, Kurt Sutter, the creator of Sons of Anarchy, has said that many women are enjoying this season and "get it" and those who are complaining just want the show to stay the same. I am a female and I don't "get" or like the way this season is going. I don't want a rehash of the same old story lines. I do want fresh, original writing that doesn't drag and make SAMCRO look like morons. I agree they're not rocket scientists, but they have always been written as clever and resourceful.

I did like the humanizing of Darby and think Mitch Pileggi did a great job with his scenes.

The last scene, with the potential adoptive family just made me want to scream. I'm exhausted from the Abel plot. Let Jax have his son back for God's sake! Even if they have to have them in danger together, it would be better than this tiresome cliffhanger every week of "what will happen to the baby now?"

I did laugh out loud at Lyla calling herself "Sarah Palin" at the abortion clinic. I'm torn on whether I want Tara to go through with an abortion. I like her and Jax together, and would like to see how they'd handle a pregnancy/parenthood story, but I'm tired of shows chickening out on abortion (like Mad Men's Joan).

Having Jax flirt with his half-sister totally squicked me out. I hope someone resolves that quick.

Fox TV to run Twitter comments during reruns

Everyone hates re-runs. They're episodes you've likely already seen, being run out of order because there is no new content to run. But Fox may have just figured out a way to make them more interesting: Twitter.

The television network will be airing old episodes for two of its shows, Fringe and Glee, with Twitter commentary along the bottom of the screen. But no, sadly, not just anyone can tweet anything and have it be on national television, these will be moderated streams. And most of the it will be taken up by the tweets of the two shows' casts and producers, apparently.

During the episodes, the cast members and producers will be watching and tweeting live. Fans be able to see their tweets on the bottom portion of their television screens or can follow along on Twitter itself by checking out the FRINGEonFOX and GLEEonFOX Twitter accounts. Select tweets from fans following along will be put on air.

Mad Men Season 3 Episode 2

This episode seemed disjointed, even the cuts to commercials were jarring, but perhaps (I hope) that was done deliberately, to show how the world is developing these "fault lines" that are going to turn into a societal earthquake soon.

Already we are seeing characters standing with one foot on each side of the divide - sometimes in unexpected ways. Paul Kinsey is defending the old, even as he is accused of being a beatnik and communist.

Peggy sees the old way of using your sexuality to get ahead, in Joan and Ann-Margret. She wants to blaze a new trail for women, and be seen for who she is, what she thinks, yet she still goes to the bar and picks up a man by dumbing herself down and pretending to be "a typist". Then she jumps to the other side of the divide again, into a modern, sexually active woman who is aware of alternatives to intercourse. She must have had some other sexual experiences since Pete, to learn that.

The schism continues with Don. Trying to convince the Brits that Madison Square Garden could become a huge account - in the future, even while he denies Peggy's notion about the Patio soda account, by telling her to just go with the sexy young girl who throws herself at the camera.

I think he was reconsidering that position when he was watching the Maypole dance though. He seemed to be connecting with the flower child/earth mother sensibility when he touched the grass as the barefoot nymph danced. Then in the confrontation in the den, his brother-in-law says, "Don't get old".

Don also told the guy from Madison Square Garden to "welcome change with a dance of joy" yet he is reminded of all of the "old" in his life, the globe, his father-in-law, even Penn Station. Again, these two jarringly different notions.

Roger is straddling the fault line more than anyone, married to his young wife, yet decorating his office with Grecian antiquities, then having his "old" family show up to discuss his daughter's "new" life.

Betty is also struggling with trying to live on both sides of the fence. Pregnant, yet trying to watch her weight (hence the Melba Toast comments). Expecting a new life, yet disillusioned with her own. She doesn't want to be seen as an uncaring daughter, but I think she will rapidly regret having her father living with them. Remember, there was no Medicare in 1963, and attitudes towards nursing homes were different then. So she may have been concerned about how it would look, and what it would cost. (I'm not altogether sure that Don has told her about the money he came into with the merger. It might be his nature to have secreted that away in a private account.)

I think this is all designed to have the audience feel (and understand on a visceral level) the shrill and discombobulating changes that are afoot.

Mad Men Season 3 Episode 1

I thought this was an excellent season opener. I have heard some complaints about the opening scene being too much like a play, but I think that was purposeful. Here was Don Draper warming milk for his pregnant wife. All very reminiscent of birth/infancy. He remembers it is Dick Whitman's birthday, and he is imagining a scene of the event - but detached, as an outsider, almost like an audience member. When the milk boils over, he scoops off the curdled skin - just as he has done with Dick Whitman's life. He is Don Draper watching Dick Whitman's birth - very schizoid, as was the entire episode. Everyone is showing two sides of themselves.

Betty is also two people - the good wife/mother that she wants to be, and the insecure and hateful person she is. She still mistrusts Don and wonders why he strayed, wonders what it was about HER that couldn't keep him from cheating on her.

She wants to be the center of Don's attention, and I think she resents her children drawing attention away. She brought up Sally's misbehavior and made the lesbian comment to drive a wedge between Don and Sally. The dynamic between mothers and daughters is often one of jealousy for the husband/father's attention.

Betty feels like she SHOULD care about being a good mother because that is expected of her, but I think she subconsciously resents that she is the one who has had to raise the children, change their diapers, feed them, potty train them, teach them and discipline them, yet they don't appreciate it. They idolize their father more. And when Don kissed Sally and said, "You're my girl," I could almost hear Betty screaming inside her head, "But I am supposed to be your girl!". And now she is going to have to go through it all again. I don't see Don handling a baby crying to be fed or changed in the middle of the night, and we've seen that he wants little to do with discipline.

Sal is also two people (duh). He is the properly married man, but he knows he is gay. I thought it was a nice touch that he was back in Baltimore, where he grew up and no doubt first discovered during puberty that he was aroused by males. He probably had fantasies about other men, but in the fantasies he himself was someone else. Someone who could have sexual feelings for other men without feeling like it was wrong. (I am not saying it is wrong, just that I am sure Sal was raised to believe it was wrong.)

Then the stars align. He is someone else - Sam Fleischmann, thanks to the subterfuge that Don concocts. And he is back in the area where he first became the imaginary man who could have gay sex. Probably even in the manner he imagined, where his companion is the more aggressive person and initiates the encounter. He is allowed to be swept off his feet and finally give in to his desire.

I do feel sorry for his wife Kitty, and I realize cheating is wrong, wrong, wrong, but I was still thrilled for Sal to have this encounter. I fear that the fire alarm may strike him as a, "sign from God" that he was doing something wrong, and will only leave him more conflicted about his feelings. Having tasted the forbidden fruit, it will only be more enticing, but he will be more terrified of acting on his feeling, or being discovered.

I loved how Don handled the situation on the way back, by saying, "Limit your exposure" both as an ad campaign and sage advice.

Pete, trying to be the grownup Head of Accounts, then reverting to his child-like behavior with his dance, and his whiny child-like self when he discovers that Ken is also Head of Accounts. Then back to his grown-up self in Don's office with Roger and Bert Cooper.

Roger is trying to act like he is still in charge, but is wondering if things are changing and he will soon be seen as unnecessary. He wants to be the newlywed with a hot young wife who can travel the world, but still be the respected and purposeful head of his company.

Joan is now a married woman, but to a man who is not Prince Charming. She is still working in the office, and while she claims she can't wait to be gone, I suspect she wonders what she will do with herself and how she didn't get the fairy tale she dreamed of.

Peggy has gotten the position she yearned for, but not the respect.

So everyone in the episode was showing two sides of themselves, even the lighting and positioning of where the characters were placed (in front of open or closed doors, standing in light or dark) was to show the split personality of the episode. The old guard changing to the new, the American company being taken over by the Brits (foreshadowing the British invasion). This sets up the whole season for "change" as the characters must face their inner and outer selves and the changes that society will face.

I thought it was brilliant.

Loving Fringe

Starting at a later hour -- and with a big lead-in audience from the season debut of "House" -- J.J. Abrams's second series about the pitfalls of plane travel clocked 13.3 million viewers in its second episode, sparking "Fringe Explodes!" headlines in trade Web reports.

While that figure still doesn't match the nearly 19 million who caught the 2004 premiere episode of Abrams's first anti-air-travel drama, "Lost," there's no arguing that it's an impressive 46 percent more viewers than the 90-minute "Fringe" premiere managed to attract one week earlier. That night, the new series was forced to self-start at 8 p.m.

It's rare for the second episode of a new series to cop a bigger audience than the show's unveiling -- probably because the failure rate in the broadcast TV series business is somewhere in the neighborhood of 90 percent. Anyway, Fox says "Fringe's" performance Tuesday marks the best Week 1 to Week 2 ratings increase for a new drama on any network in at least five years.

The "Fringe" audience and the "House" audience apparently got on like ham and eggs.

"Fringe" hung on to 93 percent of its lead-in "House" gang -- and 95 percent of those between the ages of 18 and 49, the age bracket networks bill and coo over, because advertisers pay them extra to do so.

"Fringe" actually attracted more male viewers than did "House" -- it was in fact the night's highest-rated program among men between the ages of 18 and 54.

Jericho not tumbling down

It appears that the fan assault on CBS for canceling the post-apocalyptic drama, "Jericho" has given the show a brief reprieve.

In the last episode, as a war between survivors broke out and their enemy offered a compromise that would have left our heroes in an untenable position, Jake (played by Skeet Ulrich) declared "Nuts to you!"

The fans latched onto this statement upon hearing of the program's demise, and started a campaign of sending nuts to CBS headquarters, to protest. After receiving 50,000 lbs. of nuts, CBS has offered to film a few more shows to wrap up the storylines.

The nuts are being shipped to our troops in Iraq.

The View Bids Adieu

So Rosie isn't going to stay for the last couple of weeks of her contract. Her and Elizabeth had a big fight and Rosie said screw it, I'm outta here NOW.

I am a stay-at-home mom, and I watch The View almost every day. I was delighted when Rosie shook things up and brought us political discussion from an all-women panel. I fear that is gone for good now, and it saddens me. I was appalled when John Gibson of Fox News said that the audience of The View was too weak minded to understand they were being manipulated by Rosie’s rants. I am not weak-minded. I didn’t agree with everything she said, and if I questioned her opinions (which we are all entitled to) I looked up information to verify her claims. What seems to be lost in the heat of debate, is not just what she said, but that she was saying it. She brought political debate into the living room in a way most politicians have been afraid to. Series finales have happened or are happening this month. Lots of shows canceled, too.

We watched the series finale of 24...it was, meh, so-so.

The Sopranos - Man, I don't know how they're gonna wrap this up, because this season has just been awful. So disjointed and pointless. What a shame.

I am really looking forward to the finale of Lost. Supposed to be a big reveal that "changes everything" (although we've heard that before)

There are a ton of shows that are canceled, but the only ones I watched or cared anyting about are:

The Apprentice (neener, neener, neener Mr. Trump - LOL)
I was burned out on this show and tired of Trump and his attitude. I thought having the candidates sleep outside in tents if their team lost was horrible, and had nothing to do with becoming a professional. It was degrading and humiliating.

Jericho
There's late word that fan response may pull this one back, at least for some sort of "closure". I enjoyed the first part of the show, but when they took a long break and then came back, they lost a lot of viewers, and the storylines weren't as compelling, so if it is gone for good, well, I won't cry.

The Sopranos Singing Sour Note?

We’ve been longtime Sopranos fans. When the series started, we didn’t have the satellite dish, so we had to wait for the episodes to come out on DVD. But when they did, we watched to see what everyone was talking about, and indeed, this was groundbreaking television. The stories, the characters, the acting - everything was top-notch.

Now The Sopranos is in its final season, and honestly, I’m bored.

It’s sad to see a fine series ending, but I think its time has come. Recent seasons, with Tony recovering from the gunshot wound inflicted by Uncle Junior, and the plot about homosexuality, seemed disconnected...out of sync with the hard-driving, blood and guts (physical and emotional) drama of seasons past.

Yet loyal fans hung on, holding on to the eternal flame of hope that things would pick up. That maybe there was a reason. That surely the final season would make it all worthwhile.

So far it hasn’t.

Last week’s scenes with Uncle Junior in the rest home, with an Asian fanboy were dull, dull, dull. What purpose is that serving? None that I can see.

We’ve had nonsensical changes to major characters. How did AJ go from angry party boy to wimp-who-falls-for-a-poor-girl-with-a-child? Hearing him propose with the promise of becoming day manager of the pizza parlor to support them nearly made me puke. Frankly I was glad she dumped him.

Tony becoming a gambler who can’t seem to win - come on. And the kid who pooped in the shower...spare me.

We’ll watch till the bitter end, but I fear it IS going to be bitter. I’m hoping there will be a good wrap-up that makes sense of all of it, but I’m worried it’s going to be ba-da-dung.

Rosie Leaving The View

Rosie O’Donnell announced that she is leaving the daytime television show, The View.

I didn’t always agree with the things she said, but by God, she had the guts to say them. She started many “celebrity feuds” perhaps the most famous with Donald Trump (who deserved the verbal bitch-slapping she gave him). She pounded the Bush administration hard about the war in Iraq (also well-deserved).

She is a big, outspoken woman who isn’t afraid of controversy. She says things that men who trade in contentious speech have been shouting about on television and talk radio for years.

She is a “bad girl” in a good way, because her reputation is not earned from appearing drunk in public or flashing her genitals at photographers, but because she addresses current events with well-informed opinions.

I will miss her.

The Riches

This is the greatest new show I have seen in AGES! OMG! You gotta watch it! If you’ve missed any episodes, the opening is a very nice round-up that describes how this family of Irish gypsies, known as “Travelers”, came to be living in a swanky, gated community.

It stars two of my favorites, Eddie Izzard and Minnie driver. They play a couple of American con-artists who take on the identity of a dead couple and move their family to the suburbs to live an "honest" life. Eddie Izzard becomes an attorney by default, and his con-artist skills fit perfectly, as he is able to BS his way through meetings.

Minnie Driver plays his wife, who was recently released from prison, after doing time for a scam-gone-bad. While inside, she became addicted to speed. When she is released, she discovers that her neighbor has prescriptions for little magic pills that give the same effect.

It is a truly magnificent program, showing the similarities between the con life and high-end society. It is warm and touching, and funny as hell. You HAVE to watch it!

Spielberg plots reality television series

A new TV series from Steven Spielberg and reality mogul Mark Burnett that offers aspiring filmmakers a $1 million studio contract will air this spring.

"On the Lot" debuts with an hour-long audition episode May 16 on Fox. The first films produced by 16 finalists will air in a two-hour episode on May 28, with four contestants eliminated the following night, the network said.

Weekly "film premiere" episodes will air on Mondays beginning June 4, with results episodes airing on Tuesdays.

American Idol has fired up again, like a blast furnace! Ratings through the roof, and plenty of bad, really bad, singers.

First stop was Minneapolis. What can you say when one of the winners is an admitted crack baby? They do love the military folks, even if they’re only so-so singers, they have heart and they’re wearing a uniform, so through they go.

Was Paula drunk? Who knows? Who cares?

There was the Shakira wannabe who was better than the Jewel (who was a guest judge) wannabe.

We have the secretary whose boss paid for her trip and accompanied her there. Nothin’ fishy goin’ on though (snicker)

We have the not very good auditioner who was told to try an Abba song. ABBA??? OMG, my ears are bleeding.

On to Seattle. Ugh.

They brought many of the contestants on the short bus. I’ve never seen so many Downs Syndrome people that weren't on a field trip with their caretakers from the institution. Then there were the giant eyes. Giant crazy eyed people EVERYWHERE. It was like a bad anime come to life. Simon even said one of them looked like a, “jungle creature with big eyes - a bushbaby”.

Then there’s the poor chubby girl with a bad bleach job that brought her mother. Eerie resemblance. Hey mom! Buy that child a brassiere! Her nipples are not supposed to be on each side of her belly button!

It was sad and hilarious all at once. I wonder what the public humiliation and cruelty extravaganza is doing to our culture. But I couldn’t turn away. Hey Paula, gimme a sip of whatever you’re drinkin’!

Yvonne De Carlo of the Munsters Dies

Yvonne De Carlo, the film and television actress best known for her vampire character Lily Munster on the classic 1960s sitcom "The Munsters," has died.

She was 84.

De Carlo died of natural causes Monday at the Motion Picture and Television facility near Los Angeles, said longtime friend and television producer Kevin Burns said Wednesday.

"The Munsters" lasted from 1964-1966, but it had a long life in syndication and resulted in two feature movies, "Munster Go Home!" (1966) and "The Munsters' Revenge" (1981, for television). She'll forever be Herman Munster's (Fred Gwynne) beloved wife, who stood by the bumbling Frankenstein's monster through all his misadventures.

"I think she will best remembered as the definitive Lily Munster," Burns said. "She was the vampire mom to millions of baby boomers. In that sense, she's iconic."

Along with "The Munsters," De Carlo is also remembered for playing the wife of Moses in the epic motion picture "The Ten Commandments."

She also had roles in "McClintock," opposite John Wayne; "A Global Affair" with Bob Hope; "American Gothic" with Rod Steiger and "Oscar" with Sylvester Stallone.

De Carlo was born Peggy Yvonne Middleton in Vancouver, British Columbia, on Sept. 1, 1922. Her shapely figure helped launch her career in B-movie desert adventures and Westerns in the 1950s.

Later, she had a key role in a landmark Broadway musical, Stephen Sondheim's "Follies."

The actress was able to sustain a long career by repeatedly reinventing herself. A longtime student of voice, she sang opera at the Hollywood Bowl, and when movie roles became scarce, she ventured into stage musicals.

De Carlo's death comes less than a year after the death of Al Lewis, who played Grandpa on the "The Munsters." Gwynne died in 1993.

De Carlo married stuntman Bob Morgan in 1955 which produced two sons, Bruce and Michael.

After highly publicized splits and reconcilations, the marriage ended in divorce in 1968.

Three Pounds Bites the Dust

I watched this show once, and knew it was doomed. It was just plain dull.

CBS's brain surgery

"How do you remove 10 pounds of ugly fat?" goes the old kids' joke; the answer is: "Cut off your head."

CBS has cut off further episodes of "3 LBS," its drama about neurosurgeons (the title referred to the weight of the human brain; those other seven pounds apparently came from the skull and other ossified elements of network executives' noggins) starring Stanley Tucci. The show fared even worse in the timeslot than heist drama "Smith," which CBS robbed of a future earlier in the season. "The Victoria's Secret Fashion Show," a tasteful reflection upon the urgent issue of women's intimate apparel which had already been scheduled to air 10 p.m. Tuesday, will claim the timeslot next week; what happens thereafter is anyone's guess, though no doubt CBS is no doubt culling its files hoping it has copious outtakes from its underwear extravaganza.

At May's upfronts in New York, the cocksure CBS didn't even mention any midseason replacements, and "3 LBS" wasn't introduced by the network during July's Television Critics Association's press tour, no doubt because it figured they were good to go until January. So few media outlets had any Tucci profiles to run when the show was called into its premature service, which meant precious little free publicity for the show, which, truth be told, wasn't very good to begin with.

Tuesdays at 10 p.m. have been a trouble spot for the network ever since it cancelled "Judging Amy" a couple of years ago. Last season, "Close to Home" faced cancellation there until it was moved to Fridays, where it ultimately performed admirably.

This has been an ongoing concern for the networks, which tend to pull the trigger early on nominally performing series in hopes of finding shows that might do better. Invariably, they don't, which leaves executives scratching their heads at the idea that a mediocre show might actually have proven to be their savior (see: "Boomtown," "Invasion" and, yes, "Smith").

OJ Explains Murder

Fox plans to broadcast an interview with O.J. Simpson in which the former football star discusses "how he would have committed" the slayings of his ex-wife and her friend, for which he was acquitted, the network said.

The two-part interview, titled "O.J. Simpson: If I Did It, Here's How It Happened," will air Nov. 27 and Nov. 29, the TV network said.

Simpson has agreed to an "unrestricted" interview with book publisher Judith Regan, Fox said.
"O.J. Simpson, in his own words, tells for the first time how he would have committed the murders if he were the one responsible for the crimes," the network said in a statement. "In the two-part event, Simpson describes how he would have carried out the murders he has vehemently denied committing for over a decade."

The interview will air days before Simpson's new book, "If I Did It," goes on sale Nov. 30. The book, published by Regan, "hypothetically describes how the murders would have been committed."

In a video clip on the network's Web site, an off-screen interviewer says to Simpson, "You wrote 'I have never seen so much blood in my life.'"

"I don't think any two people could be murdered without everybody being covered in blood," Simpson responds.

Simpson, who now lives in Florida, was acquitted in a criminal trial of the 1994 killings of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend Ronald Goldman. Simpson was later found liable in 1997 in a wrongful death lawsuit filed by the Goldman family.

Messages left with Simpson and his attorney Yale Galanter were not immediately returned.

Loony Limbaugh

I live in Mazoorah. I've seen the commercial that Michael J. Fox did in support of stem cell research. I applaud his courage and commitment to a cause he believes in.

Rush Limbaugh had the audacity to say that Michael was “faking it” when he had tremors and shaking during the commercial. Hello? That is what Parkinson’s DOES to the human body!

I’ve often disagreed with Mr. Limbaugh’s opinions, and I thought he was hypocrite to have lambasted drug addicts as “weak” when we learned that he himself was addicted to pain medication.

But to accuse someone who is suffering such a debilitating infirmity, of faking the symptoms, is disgusting and appalling.

Rush, you’re gonna regret that statement (many statements I imagine LOL) when your day of judgement comes. Rush’s faux apology was as disgusting as his original statement. To say he had never seen Mr. Fox show any symptoms of his disease shows not only a callous heart, but an uneducated mind, as Michael J. Fox appeared before Congress and was clearly displaying the symptoms during his testimony.

Grey's Friday

Last night’s episode of Grey’s Anatomy

There weren't many medical emergencies on this week's episode of "Grey's Anatomy." Instead, a different kind of tension rippled through the halls of Seattle Grace Hospital.

In tightly written scenes that gave much of the cast chances to shine, the doctors struggled with psychological threats rather than corporeal ones. Comic moments were few.

Bailey, Burke, Derek and Izzie each faced down their demons. Although they still seemed broken as the episode ended, each character emerged the stronger for it.

While attending a monthly meeting where the staff discusses patients' deaths, the interns watched Bailey suffer a harsh grilling at the hands of other doctors. The subject: the interns' complicity in Denny Duquette's death and Bailey's failure to control them.

The grilling left Bailey shaken, wondering whether motherhood has dulled her ability as a doctor. But some soul-searching and a pep talk/apology from the Chief reinvigorated her. By the episode's end, she found the strength to counsel a similarly self-doubting mother ("Six Feet Under" alum Justina Machado) who was suffering from breast cancer.

Burke, still experiencing hand tremors, was drafted to handle emergency heart surgery. He struggled through the operation his first since being shot with a major assist from Cristina.

Burke's tremors remain a secret. As his hand faltered, Cristina asked permission to finish stitching the patients' heart. Onlookers were surprised Burke agreed. But they seemed to assume he'd made this unorthodox move simply because Cristina is his girlfriend.

Burke also confronted Izzie, who repeatedly swore she's doing fine and claimed she'd come to the hospital only to clean out her locker. (She was nearly manic, telling everyone within earshot about the $8.7 million check. Trouble was, she couldn't bring herself to deposit it, knowing the money would make reclaiming her career even harder.)

When she arrived at Burke's office, he bristled at her words of apology. "You have two good hands and you aren't using them. Feel guilty about that," he hissed.

Izzie watched in awe as Cristina stitched the heart and it prompted her to finally see the Chief. He's ready to take her back, so expect to see Izzie in scrubs very soon.

As for Derek, his divorce was proceeding amicably until Addison blurted out that her affair with Mark wasn't just a one-night stand. "I want never to see you again," Derek told her. He walked away looking shattered.

Unfortunately, Meredith chose precisely that moment to tell Derek she dumped Finn. To her dismay, what should have been great news barely registered on Dr. McDreamy's chiseled face.

Deathwatch Fall 06

What TV Shows will die?

An exciting Monday for TV watchers.

Going into the weekend, DeathWatchers had written in to tell us that “Justice” was pulled from its Wednesday night spot, and were wondering if it had been cancelled.
TVWeek.com is reporting that actually, Fox pulled “Justice” to make room for their new game show “The Rich List” wherein contestants … really, who cares?

“Justice” sits at number 8 on the DeathWatch (odds are 29:1). Fox will now show it on Monday nights at 9pm.

Meanwhile, the much-bemoaned “Vanished” has been bumped from that same Monday night spot and moved to … oh dear, Friday nights. This is the DeathWatch equivalent of being moved into intensive care. A lot of shows go to Friday night to die. Perhaps Fox is planning an end to the possibly-ironically-named show.

“The Class” on CBS took another dip to land at number four on the Deathwatch this morning. CBS believes in “The Class,” and is trying to protect it, but there's no getting away from those sadly disappointing ratings.

Meanwhile, DeathWatch "first to go" pick -- “Men in Trees” came in third for the hour on Friday night. It scored a 2.1 rating, and finished behind both "Dateline NBC" and “Close to Home” on CBS. The ratings for the Anne Heche dramedy have begun to reflect the DeathWatch odds (3:1).
So when will it go?

Our office gossip here at BBCancelled.com is all about an article at Broadcasting and Cable, which had some interesting tidbits about “Friday Night Lights.”

Over the past week, the small-town football drama climbed to number 15 on the Deathwatch. It made its way up from number 13 last Monday. NBC has faith in “Lights,” with plans to show the first three episodes during their “Sunday Night Football” hiatus. (Odds of cancellation 99:1)

Fall Line Up

It's that time again ?- time for the fall line up. Every year, network primetime tries to lore in viewers with new favorites, oldies, plot twists and must see previews. This season is no different. With special sneak previews at each network's corresponding Web site, contests and spoilers popping up in blogs all over the internet, the television experience has come full circle.

The merge between UPN and the WB11, forming the new CW channel, has left nothing to be desired. Old favorites from both networks have returned, as well as new promising shows.

These include "America's Next Top Model" where the girls grow more exotic with each new season and "One Tree Hill," in which each episode leaves you wondering, what more can happen in such a small town?

On Tuesdays, we have the return of the teenage and female Dick Tracey, "Veronica Mars" and more girly fun with the "Gilmore Girls." And after it's much publicized final season, we have the pleasure of "7th Heaven" returning.

The newer instant classics include a show called "Runaway," which is about a man uprooting his family to evade the police. Why are the police chasing after him you ask? You have to watch to find out. We can't forget Clark Kent and the return of "Smallville" and the eerie "Supernatural."

On other networks we have cult classics such as "Grey's Anatomy" on ABC, which features love- hate relationships between doctors and patients. Also on this channel is the hit series, "LOST" where we see more of "the monster" this season.

New series on NBC seem promising, with the premiere of the show "Heroes" which is about ordinary people waking up one morning and not being so ordinary anymore.

It's like a blend between "X-men" and "Spiderman," with a hint of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer."

With the entire buzz about new shows, some prefer old favorites and cancelled shows. "I'd rather sit in my dorm and watch reruns on B.E.T. I love the old 'Steve Harvey Show,' 'The Jaime Foxx Show' and 'The Fresh Prince of Bel Air' being shown," said Debi Destina, freshman.

Others prefer more "youthful" viewing provided by the folks of Adult Swim on Cartoon Network. "I really want to see the Boondocks, if I could only watch one show all day long it would be that," said Becky Enarhebba, freshman.

If you asked for this writer's opinion, the must sees for this fall are simple; they would include "America's Next Top Model," "Grey's Anatomy," "Heroes," "LOST," "One Tree Hill" and last but not least, "Veronica Mars."

Give new shows a chance they might surprise you. Keep an open mind, but do not forget to keep up with your favorites.

Survivor Race Wars Debuts Tonight

Tonight, Survivor will begin its 13th season. There is a lot of controversy over the division of the four tribes into blacks, whites, Asians and Hispanics.
I think it will be interesting, and is a brilliant marketing maneuver on the part of the producers.

The NAACP, in a statement this week, did not condemn the show but used the topic to focus on the lack of minorities in the entertainment industry as a whole.

"Whether we like the concept or not — and, for the record, we do not — it is premature to judge the show purely on conjecture. We will judge the show on what we see, and we will monitor the public response."

David Lyle, general manager of Fox Reality cable channel, says this is a mere Survivor tempest that will do no long-term damage.

"The real problem is when the stunt swamps the show. And this stunt, regardless of what you think of it in socio-responsible terms, will only last for a few weeks before the tribes are melded," he says. "The device won't get in the way of the structure of the show. It could be inflammatory, but you can bet that all the players will be interesting characters who will get down to playing the game. And then it'll be business as usual."

I am so damn tired of those Lipo Dissolve commercials I could puke. Except I'm not bulemic. Nor am I so desperate to change my physical appearance that I would allow somebody to inject this crap I can’t pronounce.

As if the procedure itself isn’t disgusting enough, the commercials are so GOD DAMNED ANNOYING! Screaming “It doesn’t suck!” over and over and over until I want to go Elvis on the TV.

This stuff is supposed to dissolve your fat away. Except some doctors think there’s a chance it could keep right on goin’, and start dissolving your muscles. Oh joy.

My muscles ain’t great, but I think I’ll keep them, instead of pissing them away. Literally - that’s how the “dissolved” fat is eliminated from your body.)

Tim Goodman Talks About the Emmys

There's a very real possibility that the Emmys are a scam created by the television industry to make sure you're watching. Think about it. Year after year, a catalog of undeserving stars is nominated -- or worse, deserving stars are not nominated -- and people who actually watch television get outraged. It's an age-old public relations trick. And though it hasn't actually increased viewers or made the Emmy telecast a real can't-miss event, it certainly keeps the awards show in the news.

How else to explain the new nadir of the 2006 Primetime Emmy Awards, airing at 8 p.m. Sunday on NBC? A so-called blue-ribbon panel was supposedly created so the usual rubber-stamping of old shows, familiar names and past-their-sell-by-date series wouldn't happen yet again. This was the year we were to get fresher blood. But what happened? Well, 2002 happened. Or near to it. It's as if nobody even watched last season.

And if that snafu wasn't enough, there's the Ellen Burstyn incident. She's nominated as best supporting actress in a miniseries or TV movie for "Mrs. Harris." It's a kind gesture -- no, check that, an egregious gesture -- given that she was in the movie for what has been variously described as between 11 and 15 seconds. Yes, seconds.

That's pretty much your doping scandal of the Emmys, because it proves beyond a reasonable doubt what everyone with critical faculties has known for years: A lot of voters in the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences don't watch what they vote on. They see a familiar name, or the title of some series that's been the beneficiary of huge ads in Daily Variety, and they vote by persuasion, otherwise known as guessing.

So yes, the Emmys (and probably most other awards shows) are absolutely as horribly contrived as we've all suspected. But ultimately that changes nothing. Brilliance abounds on the small screen -- should you seek it out -- from acting to writing to directing. Much of the storytelling is great, much of the humor spot-on. Underneath the relentless procession of dreck and stupidity and low-bar expectations, you can almost see it shining. But you have to look, which apparently is too much effort for Emmy voters.

In the end, who really cares? So what if quality goes unrewarded? Hell, so what if it's even validated for all to see? It's just an awards show. Love the shows you do, let the statues scatter where they may. Let's just hope that host Conan O'Brien is funny and that Burstyn not only wins but also shows up to accept.

In the meantime, here's our annual list of should win/will win picks in the major categories. And this year, given the gratuitous failure of the Emmy system yet again, we offer up a "who's missing" section that corrects the many oversights, transgressions and embarrassments at hand. In short, until your friendly neighborhood critic gets to nominate and then pick the winners, you're stuck with the Emmys as they are.

Outstanding drama series: Nominees: "Grey's Anatomy," "24," "House," "The West Wing," "The Sopranos." Who will win: "24." Who should win: "The Sopranos." Who's missing: "Rescue Me," "Rome," "Lost," "Big Love," "The Shield." ("Deadwood" was not eligible for any Emmys this year.) There's certainly a chance that fluffy but enjoyable "Grey's Anatomy" will snooker Emmy voters, but "24" had a big year and has mounted a huge advertising campaign inside the industry. Still, there's absolutely no buying into the notion on this end that "The Sopranos" had a down year. Against the nominees in this category, the grandeur, nuance, storytelling and acting in "The Sopranos" is on another level.

Outstanding lead actor in a drama series: Nominees: Christopher Meloni ("Law & Order: Special Victims Unit"), Denis Leary ("Rescue Me"), Peter Krause ("Six Feet Under"), Kiefer Sutherland ("24"), Martin Sheen ("The West Wing"). Who will win: Sutherland. Who should win: Leary. Who's missing: James Gandolfini ("The Sopranos"), Michael Chiklis ("The Shield"), Hugh Laurie ("House"), Matthew Fox ("Lost"). Sutherland does a fine job with what he's asked to do, which is be in a perpetual state of stress and anger. But it's time Leary got recognized for the fact that he's not just a prickly comedian, he's a superb actor. And yet this whole topic is pointless. Gandolfini's work this past season was broadly illustrious, which is saying something, given what he's already proved he's capable of.

Outstanding lead actress in a drama series: Nominees: Geena Davis ("Commander-in-Chief"), Mariska Hargitay ("Law & Order: Special Victims Unit"), Frances Conroy ("Six Feet Under"), Allison Janney ("The West Wing"), Kyra Sedgwick ("The Closer"). Who will win: Hargitay. Who should win: Sedgwick. Who's missing: Edie Falco ("The Sopranos"), CCH Pounder ("The Shield"), Polly Walker ("Rome"), Jeanne Triplehorn ("Big Love"), Kristen Bell ("Veronica Mars"), Felicity Huffman ("Desperate Housewives"). Of the nominees, Sedgwick is the best of the bunch. But this category was a real travesty of overlooked actresses. Again, however, there's no real contest here. Falco is the poster actress this season for the biggest Emmy abuse. She won it outright in the first three episodes and solidified it later with emotional shading. Her exclusion here is beyond unacceptable.

Outstanding supporting actor in a drama series: Nominees: Oliver Platt ("Huff"), Michael Imperioli ("The Sopranos"), Gregory Itzin ("24"), Alan Alda ("The West Wing"), William Shatner ("Boston Legal"). Who will win: Platt. Who should win: Platt. Who's missing: Forest Whitaker ("The Shield"), Kevin McKidd ("Rome"), Ray Stevenson ("Rome"), Ciaran Hinds ("Rome"), Harry Dean Stanton ("Big Love"). Whitaker should be holding the trophy, and there should be very little argument about that. Imperioli is always exceptional, but it wasn't his finest year. Platt, one of the great character actors alive, was essentially told to chew scenery with his dysfunctional "Huff" character, and he didn't disappoint in that regard.

Outstanding supporting actress in a drama series: Nominees: Candice Bergen ("Boston Legal"), Sandra Oh ("Grey's Anatomy"), Chandra Wilson ("Grey's Anatomy"), Blythe Danner ("Huff"), Jean Smart ("24"). Who will win: Oh. Who should win: Oh. Who's missing: Chloe Sevigny ("Big Love"), Lindsay Duncan ("Rome"), Andrea Roth ("Rescue Me"), Callie Thorne ("Rescue Me"). The right choice might be made here. It's enough to make you fall down.

Outstanding comedy series: Nominees: "Arrested Development," "Curb Your Enthusiasm," "The Office," "Scrubs," "Two and a Half Men." Who will win: "The Office." Who should win: "Arrested Development." Who's missing: "My Name Is Earl," "Entourage," "Weeds," "Extras." First off, "The Office" is great. A win here would be lovely and justified. But "Arrested Development," a past winner, overcame its biggest obstacle -- Fox, its own network -- and wrapped up a canceled series as well as any in history. Still, the story here is "Earl" missing in action. How can this be possible (leaving aside the easy answer: It's the Emmys)? "Earl" could have won here easily. "Entourage," where art thou? And though "Weeds" might be a better fit in the drama category, it certainly should get some recognition somewhere.

Outstanding lead actor in a comedy series: Nominees: Larry David ("Curb Your Enthusiasm"), Kevin James ("The King of Queens"), Tony Shalhoub ("Monk"), Steve Carell ("The Office"), Charlie Sheen ("Two and a Half Men"). Who will win: Carell. Who should win: Carell. Who's missing: Jason Bateman ("Arrested Development"), Jason Lee ("My Name Is Earl"), Ricky Gervais ("Extras"), Zach Braff ("Scrubs"). This is definitely a what-could-have-been category. A lot of talent overlooked. Bateman should already have a couple of Emmys for his work, and an argument could be made that Lee would have won this year had he even been nominated. A shame, really, but Carell will do this category some justice.

Outstanding lead actress in a comedy series: Nominees: Lisa Kudrow ("The Comeback"), Jane Kaczmarek ("Malcolm in the Middle"), Julia Louis-Dreyfus ("The New Adventures of Old Christine"), Stockard Channing ("Out of Practice"), Debra Messing ("Will & Grace"). Who will win: Louis-Dreyfus. Who should win: Kaczmarek. Who's missing: Jessica Walter ("Arrested Development"), Mary-Louise Parker ("Weeds"), Lauren Graham ("Gilmore Girls"). As long as it's not Channing or a wet goodbye kiss to Messing, all anger will abate. But still, those are three major oversights on the missing.

Outstanding supporting actor in a comedy series: Nominees: Will Arnett ("Arrested Development"), Jeremy Piven ("Entourage"), Bryan Cranston ("Malcolm in the Middle"), Jon Cryer ("Two and a Half Men"), Sean Hayes ("Will & Grace"). Who will win: Piven. Who should win: Piven. Who's missing: Terry Crews ("Everybody Hates Chris"), Kevin Dillon ("Entourage"), Jerry Ferrara ("Entourage"), Rex Lee ("Entourage"), John C. McGinley ("Scrubs"), David Cross ("Arrested Development"), Jeffrey Tambor ("Arrested Development"). As much as it would be great to see Arnett get his due as one of the most underappreciated comic actors going, Piven has never flagged in his ability to make "Entourage" hum.

Outstanding supporting actress in a comedy series: Nominees: Cheryl Hines ("Curb Your Enthusiasm"), Alfre Woodard ("Desperate Housewives"), Jaime Pressly ("My Name Is Earl"), Elizabeth Perkins ("Weeds"), Megan Mullally ("Will & Grace"). Who will win: Mullally. Who should win: Pressly. Who's missing: Portia de Rossi ("Arrested Development"), pretty much anyone from "The Office," Ashley Jensen ("Extras"), Tichina Arnold ("Everybody Hates Chris)," Sarah Chalke ("Scrubs)." A constantly overlooked category which may in part point to the need for better and bigger comedic roles for women. But a win for Pressly would be wholly deserved because absolutely no one thought she could do that job.

BURBANK, Calif. -- August 23, 2006 -- Late television industry leader Aaron Spelling will be honored as part of this year's "58th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards," hosted by Conan O'Brien, airing live Sunday, August 27 (8:00-11:00 p.m. ET) on NBC. Stars from some of Spelling's numerous hit series, including Joan Collins ("Dynasty"), Steven Collins ("7th Heaven") and Heather Locklear ("Melrose Place") will take part in a tribute to his illustrious career as one of television's most prolific and successful producers of dramatic series and made-for-television films. The announcement was made today by Jeff Ross and Ken Ehrlich, the executive producers of the telecast.

Born in a one room house to poor Jewish immigrant parents in Dallas, Spelling went on to become the most successful and recognized producer in the history of the television medium. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, he was "the most prolific TV producer of all time." As of this year, Spelling had produced a record of more than 5,000 hours of television programming including over 300 hours of movie for television and more than a dozen feature films.

Spelling was the name behind countless hit television shows, from "The Mod Squad," "Starsky and Hutch," "Charlie's Angels," "Hart to Hart," "The Rookies," "Fantasy Island," "Vegas," "The Love Boat," and "Dynasty," to "Beverly Hills 90210," "Melrose Place," "7th Heaven," and "Charmed," among literally hundreds of other popular series and shows.

In the late 1970's, the ABC Network was referred to as "Aaron's Broadcasting Co," as Spelling had produced nearly 30 series for the network over a 25-year span, including six mini-series and dozens of movies-of-the-week. During the 1984 season, Spelling had shows on four of seven nights and programmed the network's entire Saturday schedule, while "Dynasty" ranked as the most-watch show in television history.

Spelling had amassed a number of awards and honors throughout his career, including two Emmy Awards for his critically acclaimed television movie, "Day One," about the atom bomb, and for the HBO movie "And the Band Played On," the first film to address the AIDS crisis. Spelling was the first producer to be honored by the Museum of Broadcasting and received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the People's Choice Awards. He has been honored by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences and was inducted into the Television Academy Hall of Fame. He also received the NATPE Lifetime Achievement Award as well as similar honors from The Writers Guild of America, The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, and The Producers Guild. He also received the 1st Excellence in Television Award from the British Academy of Film & Television, GLAAD's Appreciation Award and Soap Opera Digest's Editor's Choice Award. Spelling also received six NAACP Image Awards, including the organization's Humanitarian of the Year. In 1988, Spelling received the coveted Winston Churchill Medal of Wisdom.

Sometime while you're watching TV on Saturday, you might want to hold your remote over your heart and pause for a moment of muteness to mark what would have been the 100th birthday of Philo T. Farnsworth, the man who conducted the first successful demonstration of electronic television. Farnsworth was a 14-year-old farm boy and math whiz when, while plowing the rows of a field, he imagined the line-by-line electronic transmission of moving images. On Sept. 7, 1927, the 21-year-old self-taught genius sent the image of a horizontal line to a receiver in the next room. If Farnsworth's name isn't more familiar, you can blame David Sarnoff and RCA for an underhanded campaign throughout the '30's to rewrite history and claim credit for the invention (a story compelling enough for "West Wing" creator Aaron Sorkin to turn it into a play, "The Farnsworth Invention," that will debut this winter).

Last week, the remaining superhero wannabes had a chance to revamp their costumes before facing their toughest task yet: Each hero was asked to try and help an elderly lady who was locked out of her home. Problem was, there were guard dogs surrounding the abode -- and it was up to the contestants to figure out the safest way in. Tonight, a new challenge asks the superheroes to face their collective fear of heights; maybe they have to "scale a tall building in a single bound" using bungee cords and brute strength. The biggest surprise tonight comes when a previously eliminated superhero returns -- as a villain!

Rozerem Sleep Aid Commercials

Have you seen these commercials for Rozerem, the new sleep aid pill? They feature an insomniac man who enters his kitchen to find a chess set on the table, Abraham Lincoln, a talking beaver and a strange figure that is either a deep sea diver or space alien with it’s back to us, over near the stove.

There is talk about how insomnia plagues so many people and how the man isn’t dreaming, thus not visiting Abe and the beaver (who is eating from a plate using a fork).

I’m assuming the beaver is a metaphor for sex, but maybe that’s just me. LOL

But frankly, if you’re dreaming about Abraham Lincoln, talking mammals who use cutlery and unknown creatures cooking in your kitchen, all waiting to play a board game with you, I think you’ve got bigger problems than a pill is gonna fix.

Garrett has been eliminated. He is plotting how to murder Gordon Ramsey with a prison shiv.

Blindfold the four remaining chefs. Take them to “secret location” for reward challenge. They stumble out of building. Producer notes to self - next time wait to put on blindfolds in car.

Secret location is 4 roach coaches, errr, catering trucks, parked at a construction site. Construction workers will be the judges.

Zippy the Pinhead...errr, Keith: "Yo."

Bipolar Heather: "This is fabulous, no horrible. I’m perfect, no, awful."

Virginia the Vague: "I am willing to slut it up to win - hey sailor!"

Sassy Sarah: "I always wanted one of these!" Yuh huh. Every aspiring chef’s dream is to sell sandwiches out the window of a greasy aluminum trailer.

Sluttiness succeeds. Virginia wins. Chef announces she is safe from expulsion.

Heather weeps. Keith looks dazed (as usual). Sarah is surly (as usual).

Virginia gets to go on shopping spree with Ramsey. "I want one of these! What’s it called?"

Chef sighs. "A cleaver." Duh.

Return to HK, where remaining 3 have been bustin’ crabs as punishment. Virginia, who got to spend a thousand dollars, gives the others their 98-cent gifts. To her astonishment, they are not thrilled.

At dinner preparation, Heather looks like she snorted a pile of cocaine. She runs from station to station frantically. Keith is a machine, turning out appetizers in factory fashion. Sarah is slammin’ salmon, but not fast enough. Makes excuses, sets something on fire - same ol’ same ol’.

Chef Ramsay: "You stupid f#&!%!"

Sarah sulks. Virginia burns the vegetables. Chef rescinds her exemption. Everyone stops and stares. Dinner is completed. All retire to apartment to alternately smoke, curse, mope and plot.

Lineup. Virginia figures she’s a goner. Much smirking by others. Chef declares he is a man of his word, and is giving V her exemption back. Or not. Chef tells her she can go, or choose to send Sarah home. What oh what, will the jellyfish do?

Virginia: "Of course I don’t wanna go. I wanna stay. You wanna know why? ‘Cause I f***ing want to. (insert foolish giggle) That’s why."

Heather and Keith score 9 in synchronized jaw dropping.

Chef: "Virginia, I respect your decision. Sarah, take off your jacket."

Sarah hands over jacket, gets a kiss from Chef. "Kiss my grits, Chef."

Chef looks confused. Announces for those who can’t count, that they are the final three.

There's a commercial for Prilosec that shows a woman talking about how she wants to follow the "Big and Rich" tour.

She's a groupie.

Are groupies a relevant demographic now? Do they even watch television? Do they have spare change to buy Prilosec? Is an upset stomach one of their major conerns?

I would have guessed:

Sexually transmitted diseases

Slutty enough clothing

Panhandling for gas money
