Is Last Resort on its Last Legs?

Of the many new shows that premiered in the fall of 2012, one that I had high hopes for was "Last Resort" on ABC.

Unfortunately, the show has not lived up the the expectations I and many other viewers had for it. The premise was exciting and interesting - the crew of a nuclear submarine receives orders to launch their nuclear bombs. But the order doesn't come through the usual channels, so they second-guess themselves and ultimately decide not to fire. Then they discover that the US government is actually trying to kill them now for disobeying orders.

But the show writers decided to land the sub on an island that conveniently has a NATO station on it, so they can use the communication center. I am not sure why they chose not to have all of the drama on the sub itself, beyond having the island setting allow for the introduction of additional characters and bikinis.

Whatever the logic was, it was faulty and the show is struggling now. Here is an article saying that ABC has ordered a couple of additional episodes, but that the outlook is none too sunny.
